Yeah, we have these semantic arguments because the fascists have made definitions fluid like their gender definitions.
Unnecessary means not required.
If you can do something without causing harm, do it that way… or the opposite, benefitting both parties, do it that way… else, if harm is unavoidable, do it in a manner that causes the least amount of harm possible.
