the yap stones are part of an elaborate system that's only analogous to our money, it worked differently,, there were a variety of currencies & fixed prices for various social obligations in terms of multiple currencies,, i first learned about it from a book about the traditional culture of ulithi, an even tinier place than yap, they used to have to go to yap to trade & they'd give the ulithians terrible deals
