"WRT the alert system, who cares? The most the key can do is temporarily disable six json-rpc commands until the site owners either add the -disablesafemode switch or upgrade. "

"All nodes keep running and generating, the network stays up. If I'm not available, any script kiddie can figure out how to add two characters and make a new version that disables the alert system. It would be a temporary inconvenience only."

"So, theoretical this is a first control system where <some goverment> can arrest satoshi and demand that he hands over his key (or get it from his computer) and shut down the complete network?"
"This is what makes me think the people objecting don't know what they're talking about. It can't "shut down the complete network"."

So not at all like what creg has proposed?
In fact nearly entirely in conflict from what satoshi had proposed? Or am I reading that wrong. The double speak gets me all the time, and I'm easily gotten got... Hence I'm here...
nah, it looks like satoshi was trying to add warnings for when bitcoin got hacked from that thread.
nothing to do with having courts freeze funds
"Getting surprised by some temporary down time when your node would otherwise be at risk is better than getting surprised by a thief draining all your inventory."
"Someday when we haven't found any new bugs for a long time and it has been thoroughly security reviewed without finding anything, this can be scaled back. I'm not arguing that this is the permanent way of things forever. It's still beta software."
Satoshis wasn't in favor of letting courts freeze funds!?
It's just something like a scooby doo villain!?
Creg: I would have perverted satoshis system if not for that meddling bitsko and profile! I mean, I am satoshi, rewriting my system! For compliance!
so, the context seems to be that the alert key was *solely* a means to protect against code failing to perform correctly. To protect from theft of sites/exchanges.
satoshi could have said 'hey go to court to get your coins back' but he didnt, did he?
What's the problem?
Satoshi alert key wasn't a, take coins back key.
Afaict, what has been proposed 2021/2020 is a take coin back key.
