Working hard at a non-glamorous entry-level position that doesn't make your soul sing ≠ "selling your soul."

In fact, it might be the very thing that saves your soul.

This is a good strategy esp. when you're young. I wish I'd figured out my passion sooner, on the side, while doing minimally brain-intensive work to pay the bills. (But then I wouldn't have the same breadth of experiences to inform my current perspective.)
