My wife has a crystal business. She 'commissioned' me to help her design a few custom skulls, which we eventually got carved. This is the first one we sent out:

I used Maya for majority o the modeling. I exported to Mudbox to quickly check the lighting. Which was crucial to get an idea how it would look in real life.
Once the carvers started and sent back some sample pics I tried to match my 3D environment lens to their pics. I made some tweaks to the design from that comparison.
Generally the rough carve looked really good, but some details were lost in the polish stage. I asked them to keep an eye on some small design choices I thought were important.
