So I went out last night. And I always see the same thing. I don't go out that often, but neither does my girlfriend and she was reconnecting with some old friends she hadn't seen in years.
When you go to these festivals (whether it's Fiesta, Cinco de Mayo, Day of the Dead, etc.) you always see the same thing. A huge crowd, blasting concert music (so that you can hardly communicate with anyone), and the overwhelming presence of alcohol.
It is the alcohol that I find most interesting. Just how prevalent it is and how so MANY people seem to feel that you just cannot have fun without it. Everything is funny when you are intoxicated. Is alcohol a net negative? I think it's hard to argue it isn't. And you get the comments about not "being much fun" and have to turn down multiple offers to drink alcohol. It's not really about being polite that people offer you alcohol—there's something much deeper going on. But deep down, the person that isn't drinking has a clearer head and everyone around them is FORCED to respect that person. I'm at the point where it doesn't take any effort to resist alcohol. I don't see that ever changing. Starting to drink would be like returning to be a Globetard. It's that improbable for me.
I have other things I am extricating from my life. I don't need another. Consider giving up alcohol.
