what i've been thinking for a long time really is that CONTENT IS CHEAP & so that's the main reason why it doesn't work to upvalue content is that IT'S ALL WORTHLESS TRASH so you're just sorting trash??!

i think there is something to what youre saying altho i dont agree 100. i think even with knovs current small userbase upvalue is a decent proxy for good content and this will work to moderate content just by driving attention to higher upvalued stuff

ok well here's the thing is that it DOES WORK to find "better" content,, but there's lots of ways that content can be "better", & once people feel like a place is mostly strangers who disagree w/ them they start to feel like the "best" content is content that makes it so they don't lose the culture wars & the topvoted "best" things are just vociferous screeds from popular firebrands

proper moderation goes beyond is this good/bad in some general vague sense to specifically, is this good in the sense of advancing THIS conversation, the Mona Lisa is of course in many senses "good content" but if we've decided to have a conversation about how to make a proper bearnaise & you've gone off on a tangent about your trip to Paris & people are upvoting the Mona Lisa b/c it's "good" & they like it, then in context the conversation needs putting back on track

often it's not that content is "bad content" & the user needs to be punished with downvotes or a lack of upvotes, which are both really discouraging, it's just that it's CONTENT IN THE WRONG PLACE, which needs to be snipped & replanted somewhere appropriate,, the moderator doesn't need to punish & degrade & disallow conversation about the Mona Lisa, people aren't hideous noncompliant baddies for having fun talking, that thread just needs to be transplanted to an art board or a travel board so there's coherency to the conversion about bearnaise
