I've spent a long time now trying to bring more clarity into the spirit/flesh dichotomy because I find it unsatisfactory. Im still working on it and occasionally i post a vit of it here. My first problem is the term spirit, which is just too vague. Some use it as a synonym of the soul, some synonymous with mind. In both cases the dichotomy seems to imply that both soul and mind stand in opposition to the body, the physical, the flesh. I find this idea outright absurd and think this is yet another case where a dichotomy hides a more complex and interesting situation. The mind, in my experience, isn't at all opposed to the flesh. It is the spirit of matter, so to speak. The spokesman of the body, it's voice. Throwing it in there with the soul and thinking that both somehow stand in opposition to the flesh seems to be responsible for very unfortunate misunderstandings. In short, I'd say: the soul is willing, but body and mind are weak. This trichotomy opens up a completely different view that seems much more accurate to me than the spirit/flesh dualism.
