I've heard it said that it's so taboo that the legal system in the west is often brought to bear against holocaust denial. I did a little research, and other than in Germany, this is largely not true.

It appears there are no meaningful legal consequences in most western countries for holocaust denial

Yep, the german government put a 92 year old woman in jail, because she opposes the official narrative.
Second time now, if I am not mistaken.

Those Germans are particularly sensitive over the subject. Understandably so. These types of laws are targetted attempts to marginalize particular ideologies considered dangerous, and they're not exclusively used against nazism and the holocaust. There are several ex Soviet states that have laws making it illegal to deny attrocities committed by the soviets as well.
