USA: if someone on the right doesn't understand left of centre thinking, you're a socialist. Is Germany run by socialists? No. Yet many of the ideas that could be borrowed from them would be labelled as "Socialist / Commie". Why isn't this POV challenged?

Well... mein Freund, I'd say Trump branding Joe Biden as a socialist is a prime example. That guy is pretty centrist, albeit ever so slightly to the left. You couldn't stand him next to Corbyn (clue for you there) or Sanders and say they're the same.
