I have a theory that North Idaho (despite being 4 hours inland) is perhaps the most "west coast" of anyplace in America, at least in regards to the phenomenon you described above...

The mining rush here was in the 1860's...but those who came were moreso from the West, leftover from the recent gold rush - being on the western edge of the Rockies, it's much easier (and much closer) to get here from the West than from the East...

The result (the DNA selection you mentioned) is unique. In many ways, it's a noticeable difference from the Midwestern culture from which I hailed.

The people on the West coast need to learn that the way they are accustomed to things isn't how reality actually works. It's only [THEIR] reality and it's antithetical to the way society as a whole operates. Reeducation will be needed for most sadly.

Reminds me of a fascinating book I read on my last holiday (from one of those take-a-book, leave-a-book tourist libraries) called Australian Desperadoes. SF during the 1850s gold rush. Notorious Australian gang vs. vigilante mob.
