The slave class would have had a mindset that would have seemed in some ways more modern than the upper class, because of a greater reliance on empathy and kindness. The upper class would have expended a lot of resources to keep the slave class under control, and lived in fear of rebellion. In this light, their mindset may be seen to me more like that of modern criminal organizations than like the average person today.
