I think that if you are in sales or a position that meets a lot of new people then it is a great idea to have a place to connect to new individuals who can see information about you.

LinkedIn is good for you if you don't mind a couple data hacks a year. No company I can think of has been worse at handling your data not even Facebook who sells it.
