I think those people you mentioned at the top are classical Liberals (self-possession, individual rights, capitalism), not the twisted version of liberalism (leftism) as we see it today. I stood for election as a classical Liberal (Liberal Democrats in the UK) many moons ago, but stopped when I saw they were the same morality-free, feckless liars as the other two parties, was disgusted by it and never wanted to have anything to do with politics ever again. Philosophical liberalism is a beautiful thing, but politics isn’t—it attracts the worst elements of society. And then there’s the permanent government as @metamitya said, who are potentially the worst of all, because they don’t even need the appearance of virtue.
