The Teranode primary goal is to split Bitcoin system into its logical components. Planaria Bitdb just needs to become the Bitcoin storage medium for Bitcoin that is auditable with a merkle tree. Why more than one storage layer?

What I'm saying is I don't see why that Planaria nodes can't be the one and only storage medium of Bitcoin. The challenge would be to make sure the data is rapidly audit-able using the Merkle tree.
The read side of Bitcoin has always perplexed me a bit. Planaria makes me think the Blockchain could be stored in more conventional ways. The key I think will be rapid integrity validation of the resulting database. Merkle trees seem to be key to that.
