What if TAAL or OneTxnMinerGuy altered their BitCoin node code to change the block subsidy to 50 bitcoin per block? Then they just, literally, "ran with it" using > 51% hashpower and made it "standard" (like intermittent windshield wipers in 1976 Cadillac Limo)?
