Is there any particular reason for why you're using C++ instead of a higher-level language? If you're not writing something low-level which needs to be extremely performant, using C++ sounds quite masochistic.

As for me, I'm a lowly, sophomoric Python programmer who also enjoys the functional style of Haskell and JavaScript, although I'm considerably less skilled in those languages.

C++ is the highest-level language. It is simply maligned as a low level language by people who don't understand it. The only language that rivals it is Haskell.
