Has Stanley transformed? Beauty and the Beast was interpreted merely as a transformation of the self-image, not a true moral transformation, but Stanley has undergone a moral transformation. He has changed from a boy into a monster.

Earlier on in the story, when he threw the ball into the lake, he was acting authentically and with a sense of justice, as much as a child can have.

Although he was called a monster by the other children, he stood up for himself and that is something respectable. One might just as easily think that they came to respect him and feel bad for how they treated him, and that's why they invited him to play later.

At the end of the story, he will no longer act hurt either to the other children or to himself. He will just think about the piano.
