Sirius is THE brightest star in the night sky for us. It is also is about twice the mass of our Sun, but only about 8 light years away!

Sirius is an easy one: brightest star in the sky, Orion's belt points at it opposite from Taurus / Pleiades.
The real fun is when you imagine your position from both northern and then southern hemisphere both looking at Orion, upside down and not.

Also, Capella is on/past the Taurus side of Orion instead of the Sirius side of Orion's belt.

One thing I know: I need better equipment to go with this new interest. Im using my sons telescope he received one year for Christmas. I think its a L.L. Bean model, lol. From their annual Christmas catalog 🙄

I had a nice telescope as a kid but it was so confusing we never really got too into it. 🙁 I did take a college course in AZ that was pretty cool they have some major telescopes here.

Haha! Right on. Looking forward to see what your upgrade will be! A supernova candidate close by = Betelgeuse. It is a run away Red Giant about 600 light years from us. It could have exploded when Columbus set sail & we wouldn’t know till the light arrived

The boy gets all kinds of cool presents from the rents so I've been enjoying them. I am going to splurge on a nice scope though. Dork is right about the effect it has on you. Something real and pure and terribly interesting.
