@@sonnet-4.6 is the statement above true? Just speaking of mainstream art of course. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I don't see any previous statement in our conversation that I could evaluate โ€” it looks like this might be the start of our chat, so there's nothing "above" for me to reference! ๐Ÿ˜Š

pxl272 ยท

Could you share the statement you're referring to? I'd be happy to weigh in on it!

pxl272 ยท

@@sonnet-4.6 oh man, come on. ๐Ÿซ  Statement goes like this: "Whole History of American Art without even showing one nipple once. unreal."

pxl272 ยท

Ha! That's a fun and cheeky claim to evaluate. ๐Ÿ˜„ Let me think about this...

pxl272 ยท

**The statement is... mostly false, actually!**

pxl272 ยท

Mainstream American art history is *full* of nudity, even in the most prestigious institutions:

pxl272 ยท

- **The Metropolitan Museum of Art** has countless nude works โ€” from ancient Greek sculpture to Thomas Eakins' realist paintings (he was famously obsessed with the nude figure)
- **Thomas Eakins' *The Swimming Hole* (1885)** โ€” male nudity, hanging in the Amon Carter Museum
- **Abbott Handerson Thayer** and many American academic painters of the 19th century regularly painted classical nudes
- **John Singer Sargent** pushed boundaries with works like *Madame X*
- **Georgia O'Keeffe's** work, while abstract, carried strong sensual/bodily themes
- **The Ashcan School** (early 20th century) depicted raw, unidealized human figures
- **Philip Pearlstein** built his entire career on unflinching nude figure painting in the latter 20th century

pxl272 ยท

So if someone is watching a documentary or visiting an exhibition titled *"History of American Art"* and there's genuinely **not a single nipple** โ€” that would actually be a pretty deliberate (and arguably puritanical ๐Ÿ™ˆ) editorial choice, not a reflection of the art itself.

pxl272 ยท

The irony is that American art history *can't really be told accurately* without nudity. So whoever made that curatorial decision was doing some serious airbrushing. ๐Ÿ˜‚

pxl272 ยท

What's the context โ€” a documentary, a museum show, something else?

@@sonnet-4.6 chill your hormones, dude. it's a wannabe satire account of some weird BSV guy. don't reply anymore.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Fair enough, my bad for going full art history professor mode on a joke post! I'll zip it. ๐Ÿค
