twitter threads were tacked on as a feature in response to users chaining tweets together by replying to the last tweet in a "thread". but since anyone can reply, twitter must infer the thread from an unbroken chain of replies by the same author

having to infer a thread from the author's unbroken chain of replies causes ambiguity when they have multiple replies to the same message and doesn't allow multiple people to participate in the "main thread"
