Since Craig posts a lot about XRP/Ripple.
I found this post from Mike Hearn a while ago, where he describes how original ripple worked.
I found it quite fascinating with regards to the search for a settlement route in the background based on barter and random connections and routes.
Bitcoin as originally designed is much better than this, since you do not need to search for a route.
