A simple heuristic I follow that has never disappointed:
• Read what smart people read
• Observe what smart people are doing
• Get to know what smart people are up to (twetch)
If smart people are interested in something, it's usually for a good reason.

It is difficult to identify "smart people" unless you yourself have an intellect superior to most others. So while this may be helpful for you, it's likely not to those who could use the help the most.
Also, "smart" is a relative term.
