The existence of a shadow government, or deep state, alone should be a good hint at why the candidates don't really matter. The entire point of the system is that even if an outsider gets into the white house, the system isn't in jeopardy and the agenda keeps marching on, albeit sometimes a bit slower. I think it's time to look at the presidency as a largely ceremonial role. Real change would have to come from somewhere else.

I think the presidency is much more limited than the American mythology we're taught in school, but there is still real power being wielded, and Trump wields that power in a way the Deep state doesn't want which is why they are working to burn him

I wouldn't entirely deny that, but contrast it with the fact that the deep state profits tremendously from the polarization that has reached the point where both sides are convinced that the other wants to kill them.
