I worked in DM and SEO for a few years.

.com used to rank better in search engine results. Although, that may no longer be the case.

Regardless, .com is still the most coveted, as it's what people expect

.io is gaining popularity in for tech sites.

Ultimately, it's the domain that's most important. If you have a domain name you really want, but it's only available in .io....go for it as .com vs .io doesn't make as much of a difference as it used to.
