There's nothing wrong with being an atheist. But there's everything wrong with never even daring to go on the adventure of looking for God on your own.

If you take on that adventure for real, take the difficult and painful path, follow it no matter what, and you come back, maybe years or decades later, and conclude that there is no God, by any means, be an atheist!

Just don't be an atheist because you never even tried.
