That's a good point you are making. But these people were quite recently still democrats, and the democrat party hasn't been anywhere near classical liberalism for a long time. It's collectivist to the core while pretending to be the defender of individual rights. This means that the people we are talking about were either easily fooled, or they changed sides to turn the Republicans (even more than they already are) into democrats driving the speed limit. Either way, if you ask me, the stench of the uniparty is in the air.
