The controversy is that you have to buy into the community before you are a member and have a chance to properly evaluate it. Thus you get cognitive dissonance. This problem could be resolved with proof-of-work strings that could evaluated without joining.

I thought about joining metanet ICU back on the day but when I saw it's just a paid for slack chat I thought against it. I'm sure it will be a ghost town in not too long.
