At the very root of collectivism you find the perfectly reasonable intention to help survive the women and children of the tribe who don't have a provider (husband/father) - which helps the tribe survive. Females, after all, are much more important for the survival of the tribe than males.

Those vulnerable because of their biology (pregnancy/motherhood) or their age (infancy/childhood) were granted the privilege to be looked after by the "collective".
In a small tribe where everyone knows everyone, this presents only a small problem, if any, and great advantages for survival. But there is a natural limit where things take a drastic turn: when what used to be the exception turns into the norm. When the minority of net-recipiants becomes so big that it becomes a burden too heavy for the net-payers.
At this point a whole range of cascading effects set in that undermine and eventually destroy the society: First of all, it gives women an incentive to be promiscuous instead of monogamous. Why should they dedicate their time, work and life to a husband when they get the resources they need from the "collective" (net-payers, mostly men)?
Secondly, more and more people, include men, will see the possibility of being supported by the "collective" and find ways to be included in the recipient class, usually by self-identifying as victims of some kind. What was no problem in a small tribe becomes an end-of-civilisation event when applied to bigger societies.
The last straw that brakes the camel's back is when the net-recipients take control of the redistribution. Once the takers are in charge of the resources of the givers, the days of society are numbered.
Men want to control their own resources and give them to their wives and children. Wives want their husbands to control their own resources and provide for them and their children - instead of those resources being redistributed to "whores" and "bastards" with the exception of charity (voluntary).
Outside of small tribes, collectivism is adequately described as a whore-system. A system that encourages promiscuous behavior, single-motherhood and abortion. A system that undermines individual rights, furthers the centralization of power and totalitarianism and uses emotional blackmail to cripple and eventually destroy the economy.
in other words the harm or benefit of something will change depending on which scale it is operating on... [[quantity becomes quality]]
