The researchers found evidence for this wave using direct brain recordings in humans. They observed a wave of increased cortical activity sweeping from back to front through hierarchically organized brain networks at about 150 mm/s when people consciously perceived visual stimuli. Importantly, this wave was not seen when identical stimuli were presented but not consciously perceived.
