If I remember right, youtube has at least two different "frontends" which they serve kinda randomly to their users.
With different functionality/behaviour and look/interface.
Not sure if they still have, but maybe that is the reason why sometimes it works and sometimes not.
For a while is showed me the comments on the side and the recommended videos were below the video.
It was annoying as *****.
