Having a record that doesn't depend on companies, governments and censorship would be amazing.
Unfortunately pruning is in the way.
What is the shelf life of data on chain right now on BSV?

i think it depends on miners' pruning policy, as well as the existence of archival nodes, but this is def an open question

Blockchain timestamping is just a way of proofing through a hash, that some file/information/action/transaction existed at some point in time.
But if nobody, not even the creator kept the original file it may be have not been worth storing it after all.
That's the thing with "information": its is more like a graph/vector which connects raw-data to form patterns where you can extract "knowledge".
It is mainly about the raw data and the graph/information being of value to somebody.
If it isn't, nobody is storing it, if it is, a lot of people will store it and you will end up with a lot of redundancy.

If you shout out any information, nobody but yourself is responsible of storing it.
Why should anyone keep some random information in "storage" for free?
You get a timestamp for a fee, everything else is your responsibility.

It is more about hot to value the information.
What signal is good enough?
POW, upvotes, money, quantity,.....
Best way probably would be to have several metrics.

right... i think the issue is to have a protocol/policy with miners or archiving nodes about what signals/costs need to be incurred for them to store the data... for example upvalued data gets stored, otherwise you are at risk of being pruned

One more thing which got triggered, regarding the "why should someone keep some random information for free": it reminded me of "triggers" which I experienced myself many times over and over. Stuff, which I actually didn't like and which I "overheard" or read somewhere but which I wished I could have "deleted out of my memory" but couldn't.
Sometimes "ideas/concepts/information is living rent free in my head even though I may dislike it...
The question is: what characteristics does those data have, that I/we keep it stored in our minds for free, even though we may dislike it?
