The only reason we use uranium for nuclear power is that the product of its fission can be used to manufacture nuclear bombs. Development of uranium alternatives (such as thorium molten salt reactors) are still unexplored today.

no it's not the *only* reason. also there are operational experimental Th molten salt reactors in the US. the nuclear sector advances at glacial pace, for predictable reasons. a good move forward would be to start recognizing nuclear energy as renewable.
