The problem with controlled opposition is that by definition it is telling us what we want to hear, which makes it extremely appealing.

But why would the rulers want Alex Jones and Tucker Carlson tell us the truth about certain things?

Because since the birth of the internet narrative control has decreased dramatically for the Party. They cannot stop people from talking about things that earlier were easily buried.

If you can't stop people from talking about something, the next best thing is to make them listen to people you can control, instead of possible leaders of a real opposition.

This way you can still nudge them into certain directions and influence them in a variety of subtle ways.
