The problem with banning something, especially with regards to criminals is the following: the everyday citizen will abide the law and will have no more guns, whereas the criminals keep their guns, because well, they are criminals.
And one could argue, that the government, at least the current implementations around the world (maybe there are some exceptions) are criminal organizations.
At least from my point of view.
Whoever wants a gun can get one or can print or build it himself.

Overall I would agree though, that it would be best, if I do not have concerned about owning a gun, or maybe I have one which is stored somewhere in the cellar 24/7 and is only for emergencies.

Yeah, I mean really it's the problem of entropy. The genie is out of the bottle as it were and you can't put it back in no matter how many sweeping legislations are passed unconstitutionally.
And look at the school shootings as Brooz brought up, almost everyone without exception but a few were quelled and loss of life was mitigated by armed citizens on scene
