Yes, but transmitting energy through the atmosphere isn't without it's own serious issues. If you think EMF radiation were an issue before... Imagine if they were blasting energy from early on through the air.

Also, there is a great theory that's quite fair that if they were to have done this as a practice, then you may have retarded the development and roll-out of transistors and been stuck in an era of vacuum tubes, since the energy in the air would have fried many transistors.
