At some point early humans didn't know that there was a connection between sexual intercourse and pregnancy/birth. Naturally, their deities were female, as life seemed to just come spontaneously from women. The feminine was considered the creative firce. The idea of a masculine God is the next level of understanding that takes into account that there is something before, behind and beyond creation, just like there is a man involved in the creation of a child nine month before birth. One sees "mother nature" as the creator goddess, the other looks for the Father who brought fourth nature in the first place. Interestingly, we are now as a civilization regressing to primitive ideas and goddesses, willing to sacrifice people to "save mother earth".
