In physics there are two concepts involved, when you want to move something from A to B.
A frictional force and an adherence force.
The adherence force needs to be overcome in addition to the frictional force, to move something.
Once in motion the adherence force is gone and the frictional force is all there is left making the initital first move always the hardest.
I think this can be applied to mentally processes or decisions as well.
The first move or step is always the hardest because you have to break up those old bounds which keep everything in place, no matter if physical or psychical.

reminds me of the idea of activation cost in chemistry

!treesearch chemistry activation cost

hmm... ^^ not what i was thinking of... i was thinking of the idea that a chemical reaction won't start until an injection of energy into the system occurs above some threshold which then sets off the reaction as the system collapses to a state of equilibrium... but without that energy the molecular bonds will hold

Yep, same concept.
I love it when a concept can be applied to several areas :-).
