Once narrative-dominance is lost, the ruling class can no longer successfully pretend to be "liberal"
In order to keep the status quo, it must use the authoritarian tool-kit and use censorship, shaming those who threaten their narrative - and eventually, open violence.
Narrative-control is the only way for tyrants to pretend that they aren't tyrants. Once it's gone, the mask falls. Piece by piece.
But even when they become openly tyrannical, they will try to spin it. "We are only doing this because otherwise tyrants will take over. We are authoritarian only to safeguard liberal democracy."

For those who continue to believe the official narratives, this means sliding deeper and deeper into cognitive dissonance.
On one side there's their ears, picking up the narratives they firmly believe. On the other side, there's their eyes seeing what's really happening.
Both are no longer possible to bring together. The only way to deal with this, besides giving up on the narratives, is ignoring the discrepancies.
And that's why such people stop engaging in dialogue and get angry when confronted with the obvious disconnect between their supposed ideology and the official narratives.
Being forced to look at this gap creates great anger, and this anger is the only way out. "You are a terrible person. You make me angry. I can't talk to you any more."
