I think this is where a timechain fits in... to note what was said when by whom... for people to make up their own minds rather than being told "this is how it was"... which is how the media delivers carefully curated material omitting vital information.
Usually the backstories are delivered a decade or so later. That lag in time dilutes the consequences.
