There is no mental illness. There is a diversity of human behaviors, some socially approved, others socially disapproved. In modern societies, many people prefer to view some disapproved behaviors as diseases and call them “mental illnesses.”

The commonly accepted medical definition is if it makes the person’s life worse *according to that person*. Anything else is a strawman

Of course there is.We can verify this by the fruits of the behaviors if they’re destructive it not. We are not ghosts in a machine. We are limited to our human nature. Behaving outside of this causes psychosis. Hence, the term Disorder. From what?NaturalLaw

It's strawmen all the way down

Poor life choices ≠ mental illness.
A person is said to get a cold, come down with the flu, develop cancer; but he goes mad. The verb “goes” indicates that madness is a doing, not a happening.

Lol, you’ve heard it here, folks. You can murder and steal with absolutely no mental health consequences...

Crime is illegal behavior. Mental illness is illegitimate behavior...It is not surprising that crime is increasingly viewed as mental illness, and that psychiatric sanctions increasingly replace criminal penalties.

You’re deviating... Stay on point. Stop attempting to delute/distract from the conversation.

Not to mention, what a bunch of nonesense...

If a person does something dramatically bad—we immediately assume that he might be mentally ill...If a person does something dramatically good—we make no similar assumption... “mental illness” is a concept whose purpose is to obscure the obvious.

Have we all read Crime & Punishment ? Well worth it.

That's an extreme view. In ancient aboriginal society (and indeed in most stone age societies) it is reported that women and children were treated literally as chattel. If a man wanted to kill or abuse a woman or child he could do so without sanction.

This would not be considered mentally ill by the aboriginal society, but it certainly wouldn't be very popular with some individuals - particularly the women and children! Jesus saves (and backups up regularly).

Even today there still exists several remote tribes that can only be described as 'horror societies'. No sane civilized person would choose to join them, so what does that tell you?

You can try to ignore Natural Law all you want. It is a Law for a reason. Try jumping off a building and see if you can’t break the Laws of physics.

This might be a good moment to mention that the real Thomas Szasz passed away on September 8th 2012 in New York.

Jesus doesn't always save, many atrocities have been committed in his name, even today. There are also reports of non-hierarchical, democratic, egalitarian indigenous societies. Some of these cultures are almost completely gone, often "saved" by Jesus.

And I would generally describe our modern culture as a "horror society" that is nowhere near transcending the problem of humans as chattel. But all this is besides the point of the original post... or rather only reinforces it...

Mental illness is a construct. A way to exert power over others that don't share the same worldview. It's a power trip, a cycle of pain and abuse, and an age old method to snuff out marginality. Isn't that what happened to Jesus? Was he not a heretic?

Isn't it funny how normal falls midway on the spectrum between mental illness & lesser to possibly more severe undiagnosed personality disorders?
1PkvqnUqWeeEw13NwhLeEZ8gqcZ5QZCG2V (3599) ·
Interesting, can you please cite an example instance of a non-hierarchical democratic egalitarian indigenous society?

Are you actually trying to say there is no real thing such as mental illness? That's ridiculous. I suggest you get out into the world and meet some people. The criminally insane will be most edifying.

Hunter-gatherers are more egalitarian than farmers but also more violent, clannish, and unable to support a population of significant size or advanced civilization.
