McLuhan suggested that when we extend a human faculty through technology, there is a corresponding shift or change in personal and societal behaviors. For example, the wheel extends the foot, electricity extends the central nervous system, and so forth. However, McLuhan also warned that these extensions can often lead to the atrophy of certain skills or abilities that were once crucial. For instance, while telecommunication technology extends our ability to communicate over long distances, it may reduce our reliance on and ability to appreciate face-to-face interaction.
