Made this a goal very early in my career and have had nearly 15 years of being mostly on my own schedule, and the last 10 of those completely on my own schedule.
Worth more than any pay raise to me.

A 9-5 job with only two days for yourself ( Saturday and Sunday) + a lot of time spent in preparing to go to work + fixed wage/income: not the best idea.
Time is everything , and not having time for your projects and yourself is not worth it.
