Good question. Perhaps it's purely aesthetic. Attempts to capture the zeitgeist of the time. Classical (order, formalism, logic) Romantic (sentiment, chaos, expression)

Interesting. I've never really been drawn to anything for their historical nature, though history fascinates me. It has to speak to *me* rather than my fascination with history, if that makes sense.
