Plankton are the major shell or calcite producers. Waters with low pH have shown incomplete shell structures. Heavy metals, high acid levels in green oceans mean these one-cell organisms can no longer absorb the the nutrients they require to form shells. Coccolithophores are our earth's carbon pump and the base of our entire food chain.
