"When the looting starts, the shooting starts."

Someone claimed (it appears incorrectly) that "That comment comes from a racist Republican from the 60's who was threatening to shoot black people for reference."

The problem with this is that no matter who originally said the comment, it is now AUTOMATIC 100% PROOF OF RACISM!!

Except, there are perfectly legitimate reasons to say that phrase, and that includes the possibility of merely describing cause and effect.

The moment you create taboos, especially taboos that attach labels to people that instill disgust and fear in others, it becomes a way to mislead, manipulate, and deceive in order to pit people against each other.

It is association by coincidence, leveraging plausibility of intentional reference and an improper burden of "You have a responsibility to use language that won't offend me!" to mark a man as evil.

This is not justice. This does not promote peace.

It is the same logical structure as "Hitler drank water, you're drinking water, therefore you're a Nazi!"

If you understand why that argument is flawed, you can recognize that "you said something a racist once said, therefore you're racist!" is flawed.

This is one example of why it is essential to understand and use sound reasoning.

Reason is our sole tool with which to determine truth from falsehoods.

Falsehoods are used to promote division, hatred, and violence in the service of evil ends.

Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Give not into evil, but fight ever more boldly against it.

I don't always agree with the way you reason (and you, me), but I agree wholeheartedly with your statement here about reason.
