You can Add both Private and Public Streams.
On the Stream settings page, you can choose if your new Stream will be Private or Public.
You can also choose how often you will receive notifications for this specific Stream.
Last but not least, you can invite other users to become (team) members of that Stream.

@metamitya I am curious about the private/public behavior. Can I turn a Stream that I created as being Public into a Private Stream again and vice versa?

@metamitya Is it possible to remove users that you earlier invited to a custom Stream? What happens to their posts/contributions that they made before you removed them? Will they still see their contributions up to the moment you removed them or will all be removed?
