Even if mortality is comparable to the influenza we regularly deal with, the novelty factor results in a significant time compression of cases which overwhelms healthcare systems.

Imagine car crashes did not exist your whole life, and now there is the novel car crash. Suddenly all the crashes that would have happened in the past, all start happening now.

Driving would appear to be an absolutely reckless activity. But in reality, odds of being in a crash over your life would be the same.

However, I would much rather be in a crash when hospitals were not overwhelmed. I do not want to be in a 900 car pileup.

Yeah we've seen that hospitals can become overwhelmed with this thing. I'm not saying it's not dangerous.

Fake News is real.

Oh of course. I didn't mean to imply that you did. You're clearly familiar with bandwidth related problems...
If only increasing healthcare bandwidth was as easy as changing a block size limit.

The article seems to ignore the bandwidth issue, though..

Easier to get overwhelmed considering weakening immune systems due to yearly cuts to health services, dropping quality of food thanks to GMOs and squeezing profits, obesity, pollution etc
