I have been known to complicate matters, take this with a grain of salt - what about... giving the owner of the thread options/permissions along the way - to privatise *some* of the conversation, make it possible to have a change of mind if the thread/conversation gets out of control, takes a twist?
Human behaviour, to mimic how it is we already behave rather than forcing a particular way.
