Probably not just financial. Verifiable timestamps have a lot of potential uses. Copyright and patent industry could obviously use timestamps. So could in investigative reporters. Not to mention information storage in general. We haven't seen anything yet.

One way of looking at it is that blockchain is a byproduct of bitcoin protocol, a public database that the majority of miners agreed upon. People, programs create transactions and if they are viable, miners include them in a block, and again, and again...
